Association of Croatian Trade Unions and the Institute for the Advancement of safety at work

As part of the European Social Fund “Strengthening social dialogue – bipartite and tripartite contribution to the processes ” was held conference about “The role of social partners in ensuring healthy workplaces”. The conference was organized by the Association of Croatian Trade Unions and the Institute for the Advancement of safety at work on the occasion of April 28, the Workers’ memorial day.

The conference was opened by the President of the Association of Croatian Trade Unions Mr. Vilim Ribić, expressing dissatisfaction with the neglect of this subject in public. In the first part of the conference presentations held Mr. Vitomir Begović, director of the Institute for the Advancement of safety at work Ms. Darja Maslić Seršić from the department of Psychology at the University of Zagreb and Ms. Sandra Telebec from the Institute for research and development.
 
"A healthy workplace is a basic human right and a precondition for the ability to perform the job," said Mr.Vitomir Begović and concluded that it is of great importance for continuous improvement in this area. About the dangers of stress in the workplace talked Ms. Darja Maslić Seršić, adding that "global changes such as technological development, recession, restructuring, outsourcing and temporary contracts affect the increased demands for flexibility and individual to create new sources of stress, such as overload and job insecurity" . Ms. Sandra Telebec describe the way that Institute for research and development do activities arising from the provisions of the Law of safety at work, pointing out that "the response to such actions is not negligible, but still too weak."
 
The second part of the conference starts with presentation of the Law on safety at work. It has opened Mr. Vitomir Begović and concluded that "investment in safety at work is not an expense, that it is an investment." The formal part of the conference program concluded Ms. Marina Borić, Senior Adviser in the Institute for the Advancement of safety at work, who explain to the participants the process of the selection for a representatives of safety at work. The experience from the application of work safety with the union by a panel discussion presented the Nijaz Karić secretary general of the Independent Union of Secondary Education Employees Croatian, Vilko Smrečki Commissioner of the Independent Union of Science and Higher Education and Ljiljana Sambol Commissioner Croatian trade union of nurses and medical technicians.
 
The conference induce a debate in which the representatives of the trade union pointed issues and examples from professional practice. Conclusion of that debate is that there is still much space for improvement. Dissatisfaction was particularly pronounced for non-compliance with professional standards, lengthy and complicated procedure for the selection of Trustees, as well as the problem of style of management. Representatives of the Association of Croatian Trade Unions and the Institute for the Advancement of safety at work concluded conference expressed the need and likelihood of establishment of the committee whose task would be improving the system of safety at work in the public service.
